The region’s rising sports stars can apply to Bundaberg Regional Council for funding support to assist their representation of Queensland at national events or Australia at international events through the Young People in Sport (YPIS) program.
The program offers grants to eligible Bundaberg Region athletes and this year has been given an added boost under new Community Grant guidelines with the total grant amount available per athlete now up to $400, doubling from $200.
Community, Liveability, Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Cr Carmen McEneany said the program was designed to ease the financial burden on families and help young athletes reach their full potential.
“This program is about backing our region’s young athletes and helping to minimise any financial barriers for their opportunity to shine on the national and international stage,” Cr McEneany said.
“Whether it’s athletics, team sports or individual pursuits, we want to help ease the cost burden of participation at higher level sporting competitions.”
Applications for the YPIS program are open year-round and must be submitted before the commencement of the sporting event being applied for.
Grant applications are to be completed by the local sporting club or organisation where the athlete is a member to satisfy requirements of the application process.
“Behind every young athlete is a network of coaches, clubs and families helping them succeed,” Cr McEneany said.
“This grant is a way for Council to be part of that support system for our region’s sporting youth.”
To be eligible, athletes must be under the age of 18 at the commencement date of the sporting event, reside in the Bundaberg Regional Council area and be selected to represent Queensland or Australia in a recognised sporting competition.
School-based competitions are not eligible under Community Grants Policy.
