A major safety boost is on the way for motorists and pedestrians in Bundaberg West with a busy local intersection set to be transformed through the construction of a new roundabout, raised pedestrian crossings and upgraded street lighting.
The Branyan and Crofton Street intersection has been identified by Bundaberg Regional Council as a priority site for improvement, with the planned upgrades designed to slow traffic and make it safer and easier for people to move through the area.
Funding for the project has been secured under the Australian Government’s 2025-26 Black Spot Program, an initiative aimed at improving safety at high-risk locations across the country.
Roads and Infrastructure (Urban) portfolio spokesperson Cr Larine Statham-Blair said the intersection played a vital role in the daily lives of many residents.
“The Branyan and Crofton Street intersection is a particularly busy area, with a childcare centre, medical precincts and a range of businesses nearby,” she said.
“Each day there are families, patients and staff navigating this area.
“These improvements will make everyone’s commute safer but it will also streamline the flow of traffic for all of the people who rely on this important connection to essential services.”
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the project was an important investment in the community.
“The Branyan and Crofton Street intersection is one of a number of important safety upgrades Council is delivering this year,” she said.
“As our population continues to grow, ensuring our road network keeps pace is essential for the safety and efficiency of our community.
“Council is focused on practical, well‑planned improvements that deliver real benefits for residents.”

Construction will begin in April and will generally take place during the hours between 6.30 am and 6 pm, with some activities potentially required at night between 5.30 pm and 6 am to minimise disruption and keep the project on track.
Due to the nature of the works, a combination of lane closures and full road closures will be required at various stages.
Access to adjoining businesses and private properties will be maintained throughout construction.
Council acknowledges the temporary inconvenience and thanks businesses, residents and road users for their patience and cooperation as these important safety upgrades are delivered.

Please make a new roundabout at the intersection of the Ring Road and the Isis Highway. It can take a long while to be able to turn right off the Ring Road with all the highway traffic going North and South in the morning and afternoon. A Roundabout would make it possible for cars to turn right on a roundabout without risking life to beat cars coming and going. Please consider this idea very seriously before there are more accidents than there has been.
Great but I think it here is a more important one than that intersection.
Would be wonderful if you could do something about the intersection end of Twyford street and Kendall’s road heading to the airport. This one is a shocker.
Should also put a roundabout on the corner of electra & branyan
Cannot see traffic coming to the right because of cars & trucks parked in front of bros bakery. I have nearly been wiped out a few times
Waste of money and time, the crofton street branch is a dead end on the eastern side and carries low volume traffic on the western side, this is just another example of spreading traffic chaos, look at targo st barolin st Marlborough st no wonder traffic chaos rules in Bundy and in the name of safety, really. We need a real council not a fashion statement.
if it’s so bad then put in lights, they are safer because of how many drivers are always in a hurry to beat other drivers, there are other areas that need all this more
