Spotlight on pests at Agrotrend

Heading to Agrotrend? There will be plenty of great stalls on display, including Council’s Biosecurity officers who can help you identify those pesky pest plants growing in your garden!

Pest species of all shapes and sizes will be in the spotlight at this year’s Agrotrend as Bundaberg Regional Council’s Biosecurity team returns to provide expert advice and support to landholders.

Council officers will be available at Site 20B offering guidance on managing invasive plants and animals, no matter your property type.

Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk said the stall would be a one-stop-shop for pest management solutions.

“Our Biosecurity team does a fantastic job supporting landholders with best-practice pest management, from strategies and techniques to the tools available,” Cr Kirk said.

“They’ll also help residents understand how to meet their general biosecurity obligation under the Biosecurity Act 2014.”

The stall will feature a wide range of resources including factsheets, booklets, reference manuals and educational videos as well as materials designed for younger visitors.

Cr Kirk said officers would also be available to help identify mystery plants.

“If you’ve got a strange-looking plant in your backyard and you’re not sure what it is, bring it along in a zip-lock bag (or even just some photos) and our officers will do their best to identify it,” he said.

“While you’re there, ask about our popular Plant Swap Program which helps residents replace invasive species with native alternatives.”

Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk said the stall would be a one-stop-shop for pest management solutions.

Cr Kirk said Agrotrend was the ideal venue for Council to connect with the community.

“Agrotrend brings together everything agricultural from education, innovation and inspiration – making it the perfect place for our teams to engage with landholders and promote the support Council offers,” he said.

“The agricultural sector is a vital part of our region and this event allows us to strengthen those connections.”

Agrotrend will be held at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct on Friday September 12 and Saturday September 13 from 8.30 am to 4 pm.

This year’s Agrotrend event has received a welcome boost in funding thanks to Bundaberg Regional Council, with $5,000 granted to support the long-running local agricultural showcase.

Council stalls featured will include Waste and Recycling, Biosecurity, Disaster Management and Connect with your Councillor.
