Public urged to keep clear of beach erosion

Significant erosion has occurred along approximately 300 m of shoreline between First Avenue and the Woodgate boat ramp, resulting in the formation of a steep sand cliff that poses a risk to public safety.

Bundaberg Regional Council is urging residents and visitors to stay clear of a severely eroded section of Woodgate beach recently caused by seasonal king tides, with safety measures to be implemented ahead of the holiday period.

Significant erosion has occurred along approximately 300 m of shoreline between First Avenue and the Woodgate boat ramp, resulting in the formation of a steep sand cliff that poses a risk to public safety.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said the erosion had been driven by recent king tides and further impacts were expected.

“The erosion is already severe and with upcoming tides and forecasted weather, the likelihood of further damage is high,” she said.

“Council will fence off the affected area and install warning signage to prevent access to the unstable section of beach.

“While the footpath will remain open, the fenced section must not be accessed.”

Mayor Blackburn said the safety messaging was particularly important with Woodgate expected to see a significant increase in visitors over the Christmas and New Year period.

“Woodgate is a popular destination at this time of year and we’re asking everyone to take these warnings seriously and keep well away from the fenced area,” she said.

“This is especially important for families with children and pets as erosion zones can be unpredictable and dangerous.”

Council will fence off the affected area and install warning signage to prevent access to the unstable section of beach.

In the longer term, Council is progressing plans to mitigate the erosion including seeking the required permits to extract 9,000 cubic metres of sand from Theodolite Creek to replenish the impacted section of beach.

A detailed business case is also underway to assess broader sand nourishment options for Woodgate.

The community will be invited to provide feedback as part of this process in the New Year.

Council will continue to monitor conditions at Woodgate and adjust safety measures as required.
