UPDATE 23 December: Laboratory results have confirmed that from the limited number of cement pieces located, the samples taken contained asbestos material.
Exclusion fencing has been installed in impacted areas, at the rear (adjoining car park and Saltwater Creek) and front (FE Walker St/Pyefinch Bvld) of the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre site, to ensure public access is restricted in these areas.
Access into the aquatic centre is not impacted by these investigations.
EARLIER: Bundaberg Regional Council has cordoned off a grassed area on Pyefinch Boulevard as a precaution following the potential identification of materials containing asbestos.
The area is adjacent to the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre car park.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said temporary fencing and signage was now in place.
“The area has been cordoned off as a precaution while testing and investigations are underway,” she said.
“Community members must stay clear of the fenced area.”
Access to the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre is not impacted by these investigations.
