Bundaberg Regional Council is reminding pet owners to plan ahead this Easter to keep their furry companions safe, calm and accounted for during the holiday period.
While Easter is a time for family gatherings and travel, it can also present hidden risks for pets, from unfamiliar foods to changes in routine and visitors to the home.
Watch out for Easter treats
Chocolate and rich holiday foods commonly found at Easter can be toxic to pets. Residents are urged to keep chocolate, cooked bones and other festive treats well out of reach of curious paws.
Create a calm retreat
With increased activity and visitors over the Easter break, pets can become anxious or stressed.
Providing a quiet, comfortable space where pets can retreat can help them feel secure.
Plan for warm weather
As temperatures remain high, it’s essential to ensure pets have access to shade and fresh water at all times. Pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
Plan ahead when travelling
If you’re heading away over Easter, consider responsible care options such as:
- arranging a trusted pet sitter so pets can remain comfortable at home
- booking a reputable boarding facility
- providing toys or other enrichment items to reduce boredom and barking
- advising neighbours you’ll be away and sharing emergency contact details
Ensure your pet can be returned home
Council is also reminding residents of the importance of keeping pet registration and contact details up to date.
During holiday periods, pets may be more likely to escape and current details help ensure they can be quickly identified and returned home if they become lost.
Pet owners are encouraged to check and update their details with Council before heading away this Easter.
