Bundaberg Regional Council has officially adopted its updated Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP), marking an important step in planning for the region’s future growth and development.
The LGIP is a key part of Council’s planning scheme and identifies the major infrastructure needed to support a growing community, such as water supply, sewerage, roads and pathways, stormwater systems, parks and community facilities.
Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn said the LGIP played a vital role in shaping the region’s future.
“The LGIP is essentially our roadmap for infrastructure,” she said.
“By updating the plan, we’re making sure our decisions are based on the latest population data and growth forecasts.
“That means better planning and better outcomes for residents.”
Council sought approval from the State Government to adopt the amended plan following public consultation in August 2025.
In March 2026, Planning Minister Jarrod Bleijie MP confirmed the amendment met all requirements and could be adopted without conditions.
The amendment includes updates around key data such as population and employment projections.
It also ensures the plan aligns with current State guidelines and Council’s latest infrastructure strategies.
Importantly, the LGIP allows Council to fairly manage the cost of growth by applying infrastructure charges to new developments.
This helps ensure that new infrastructure is funded in a sustainable way, without placing unnecessary pressure on existing residents.
The adoption of the LGIP amendment follows a detailed review process that included community consultation.
Mayor Blackburn said community input was an important part of the process.
“We appreciate the feedback we received during consultation” she said.
“It helped us refine the plan to better reflect local needs and expectations.”
