Learn stories of Bundaberg’s past on cemetery tour

Take a tour of Bundaberg Cemetery as part of Australian Heritage Festival celebrations in the region.

Take a stroll through Bundaberg’s past and hear about some of the prominent people who helped shape the region on a guided tour of Bundaberg General Cemetery.

Bundaberg Regional Council is offering two free tours on Saturday 16 May as part of this year’s Australian Heritage Festival celebrations.

Bundaberg General Cemetery has been used for burials since 1873 and is the final resting place for many of the region’s pioneers.

On the guided tour, participants will learn about the history of the cemetery and how it came to be established in its current location.

The tour will then walk past the gravesites of selected notaries, such as architect Frederick Faircloth, who was integral in rebuilding Childers main street following a fire in 1902, and Robert Cran and sons, a family who played a key role in establishing the sugar cane industry in the Bundaberg Region.

Tours are free, but numbers are limited and booking is required.

Participants will meet their guide at the Hampson Street entry closest to the corner with Takalvan Street to commence the walking tour.

Hats and comfortable shoes are recommended, and participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle.

Australian Heritage Festival runs from Saturday 18 April to Monday 18 May, with community and Council events on throughout the month.
