Exhibition openings to enjoy in May

Galleries exhibitions May
‘Metal in Motion’, ‘Lost in Palm Springs’ and ‘The Nature of Silk’ are among the exhibitions opening at Bundaberg Regional Galleries in May.

Community are invited to celebrate with exhibiting artists and curators as Bundaberg Regional Galleries’ launch five new exhibitions in May.

A special opening night event for ‘Lost in Palm Springs’, ‘Shifting Perspectives: the Self Reconciliation Project’ and ‘Post Truth’ will be held at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery on Friday 1 May.

Curated by award-winning Australian writer and conceptual artist, Dr Greer Honeywill, ‘Lost in Palm Springs’ is a national touring exhibition that brings together 14 internationally recognised artists, photographers and thinkers from America and Australia.

It explores the magical qualities of the landscape and the celebrated mid-century modern architecture found in the desert city of Palm Springs, California and its influence on contemporary culture.

‘Shifting Perspectives: the Self Reconciliation Project’ from Bundaberg-based artist Avi Amesbury uses the narrative of a settler descendent to confront truths and acknowledge the past.

Avi uses ceramics and storytelling to examine her family’s history in the Western Australian wheat belt.

In ‘Post Truth’, Gureng Gureng / Gangalu artist Darren Blackburn addresses some of the issues at the centre of the Australian Government’s Close the Gap campaign.

Touching on oral history from his Elders and reworking those messages, Darren channels personal observations and his lived experience into his exhibition featuring led-neon signs.

The galleries will host an opening event for children and families at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery on Saturday 2 May to launch ‘The Nature of Silk: The Glad Not Sad Book’.

The exhibition brings to life the colourful silk art of children’s book author Kim Michelle Toft and features 10 hand drawn and painted silk artworks, alongside working sketches and early manuscripts.

The opening event will include silk painting demonstrations, a book reading and other fun family activities.

Metal in Motion at Childers

Kevin Dekker’s exhibition ‘Metal in Motion’ will open in Childers Arts Space on Saturday 9 May at 2 pm.

The exhibition presents a collection of sculptures that challenge the cold hardness often associated with steel, wood, stone and ceramics.

Having been forged, cut and carefully shaped, his metal works explore movement such as fluid milk frozen mid-pour, ripples in a metallic pond or flames rising and twisting.

The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider hard materials not as static or cold, but as expressive, dynamic and alive.
