A major sewer relining program will soon improve the reliability and lifespan of underground infrastructure across several local suburbs in the Bundaberg Region.
Works will take place this month in Kalkie, East Bundaberg, South Bundaberg, Thabeban and North Bundaberg and once complete, will add another 50 years of life to the network.
Bundaberg Regional Council has already completed the first stage of the project which included refurbishing a number of manholes identified as showing signs of wear from gases and erosion over time.
The second stage, sewer pipe relining, will continue through to July, weather permitting.
Water, Waste and Renewable Economy portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels said the project involved repairing existing underground pipes without the need for major excavation.
“Pipes identified through CCTV inspections are cleaned and then lined internally with a durable material that forms a new pipe within the old one,” he said.
“The lining is set in place using heat or ultraviolet light, creating a strong, long-lasting seal.
“It’s an amazing bit of technology that allows for a large job to be completed in a timely manner.”
During the works, sewer flow will be temporarily redirected in sections of the network.
Residents may notice work crews in their area but disruptions are expected to be minimal.
Cr Bartels said the program was a proactive step to maintain essential services and avoid more costly repairs in the future.
“By investing in these upgrades now, we’re extending the life of our sewer network and reducing the risk of failures that can impact homes and the environment,” he said.
“This method allows us to carry out critical repairs underground with minimal digging, which means less disruption for our community.”
