Heritage buildings and organisations across Childers will open their doors to admirers of heritage, as part of this year’s Australian Heritage Festival.

Organised by local historian Scott Stedman, Childers Heritage Day is an annual celebration of the historic town’s unique streetscape and heritage traditions.

We asked Scott to share with us some of this year’s highlights.

What are you doing for Australian Heritage Festival this year?

Childers Heritage Day will take place on Saturday 9 May with activities held across Childers.

We have some wonderful new attractions this year including two-times World Champion Blacksmith Dan Davie, Button Lace Makers and sewing circle at the Childers Historical Complex and an exhibition of interesting items at the Childers Art Gallery and Backpacker Memorial.

When and where will your event be?

The main focus will be the Childers Historical Complex in Taylor Street, however there will be open house at the C.W.A, Firehouse Potters, Catholic and Anglican Churches, Isis Masonic Lodge and the Federal Hotel.

How can the community get involved or attend your event?

All venues are free to attend and participate.

Why did you decide to get involved in this year’s heritage festival?

This is our 5th year of participating and gives back to the community with charities able to raise valuable funds.

Why do you think it is important to preserve and appreciate heritage in the Bundaberg Region?

‘Preserving our Past for the Future’ is the motto of the Isis District Historical Society Inc and this is what we do at the Childers Historical Complex and the Childers Old Pharmacy Museum, all in our heritage listed CBD.

Australian Heritage Festival runs from Saturday 18 April to Monday 18 May.
