A new exhibition from the Australian Wearable Art Festival (AWAF) gives art lovers and fashion fans a rare opportunity to experience remarkable outfits at close range.
Opening at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery on Friday 24 July, ‘A Wearable Canvas’ showcases a collection of winning pieces from the AWAF’s past shows.
Now in its sixth year, the festival brings together artists and designers for an exploration of form, structure, texture and colour often using an eclectic mix of materials.
Pieces merge materials in weird and wonderful collaborations where art, science, fashion and technology collide.
Off the runway and displayed in the gallery space, visitors can experience a close up view of the intricate details and techniques used to create wearable masterpieces.
Gala event
Bundaberg Regional Galleries will host A Wearable Canvas Gala as part of the 2026 Taste Bundaberg Festival.
The evening will unveil a parade of never-before-seen wearable artworks, with artists from across Queensland showcasing new and innovative designs.
Event goers will also hear from the duo behind the AWAF, Wendy Roe and Helen Perry, who will share rare insights into the creativity and inspiration behind these striking creations.
Guests will also enjoy a curated culinary experience, featuring canapes and bespoke cocktails crafted exclusively for the event.
A Wearable Canvas Gala will be held on Saturday 5 September, as part of the Taste Bundaberg Festival. Head to the online program for the booking link.
Opening weekend
The exhibition opening event on Friday 24 July will also celebrate the launch of ‘One Thread Many Loops’ and ‘Shifting Ground’.
On Saturday 25 July, ‘Shifting Ground’ curator Larissa Warren will discuss the collaborative process behind the exhibition that features ceramic artists from the Tamborine Mountain region.
For the opening weekend, artist Mieke van den Berg will also share insights into her sculptural practice and use of thread and wool to create ‘One Thread Many Loops’.
