Alexandra Park Zoo is inviting the community to come together for conservation, with a public barbeque fundraiser outside the zoo entrance.
The event is part of a national campaign led by the Australasian Society of Zoo Keeping (ASZK) to support endangered wildlife.
All proceeds will go toward protecting the critically endangered Mountain Bongo – the world’s largest and heaviest forest-dwelling antelope with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild in Kenya.
Timed to coincide with International Zookeeper Day the day after, the fundraiser also celebrates the dedication and passion of zookeepers around the globe.
The event is being run entirely by Alexandra Park Zoo staff, some of whom are volunteering their time to cook, serve, and donate in the name of the zoo.
Mayor Helen Blackburn praised Alexandra Park Zoo’s support of the initiative, saying it reflected the spirit of Bundaberg’s community.
“Our zoo team continues to go above and beyond, not just for the animals in their care but for global conservation efforts,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Their passion is infectious and this fundraiser is a wonderful way for locals to show their support and enjoy a bite for a good cause at this wonderful venue.”
Council’s Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Kirk said when it came to conservation, the zoo team didn’t just talk the talk, they rolled up their sleeves and led by example.
“This fundraiser is a great example of what happens when passionate people take action,” Cr Kirk said.
“Every sausage sold helps protect a species on the brink and every staff member involved is doing it out of love for wildlife and community.”
All proceeds from the BBQ will go directly to ASZK as the official fundraising organiser.
