The Gin Gin and District Pony Club tied a ribbon around its annual sporting weekend and gymkhana thanks to a micro grant from Bundaberg Regional Council.
The club used the grant money to fund the cost of the ribbons awarded to participants at the equestrian event held on 16 and 17 August.
Gin Gin and District Pony Club’s Jay Pershouse said the support had made a huge difference to the small club.
“Our annual sporting weekend and gymkhana brings together riders from across the region, offering them the chance to compete, connect and grow,” Jay said.
“These events give our members something to strive for, help them develop confidence and foster long-lasting friendships.
“Grants like this make it possible for us to offer a comprehensive program that caters to all ages and abilities, attracting participants from more than 60 km away.”

Jay said the grant allowed the club to provide a full set of over 200 ribbons for riders placing first to third across 32 events.
“Awarding ribbons on the day is a key part of recognising the effort, skill and dedication of our riders,” she said.
“For our younger members especially, receiving a ribbon is a source of pride and motivation – encouraging them to keep working hard with their horses.
“However, the rising cost of ribbons has made it increasingly challenging for small, volunteer-run clubs like ours to meet all the expenses involved in hosting a large event.
“This micro grant has eased that burden.”
Applying for a micro grant
Council’s micro grants program aims to provide financial assistance to community groups and associations that meet recognised community needs, with the cap recently lifted to $2,000 per eligible application.
Applications are open for twelve rounds per year, opening of the first day of each month and closing on the last Friday of each month, until budgeted funds are expended.
“We became aware of the grant through the council’s grant writing workshops held in Gin Gin a few years ago and then by regularly checking the Bundaberg Regional Council website for funding opportunities,” Jay said.
