Local artists and community groups will have space to let their creativity bloom through a new initiative to bring more arts programming to Bundaberg’s CBD.
The Open Space program, led by Bundaberg Regional Galleries and funded through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), offers five local artists and community groups the opportunity to showcase their artwork for two weeks.
Bundaberg Regional Council will provide in-kind support valued up to $1,000 to assist successful applicants to stage their exhibitions in the Bundaberg School of Arts building.
Council’s Arts and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said the program was part of Council’s Safe Spaces, Thriving Places initiative.
“Council recognises the importance of community engagement with arts programming to create a more vibrant and inclusive CBD,” Cr Learmonth said.
“The Open Space program is designed to provide a temporary exhibition space for artists or groups to try out new ideas, with support to see their ideas realised.
“It is an opportunity for artists to reach a different audience and for the community to enjoy a dynamic exhibition series throughout the year.”
Cr Learmonth said emerging artists, culturally diverse practitioners, First Nations artists and community-led projects were encouraged to apply.
“The program aims to break through the barriers that artists may face when exhibiting, such as accessibility, financial limitations or venue availability,” he said.
“In-kind support offered, such as installation assistance and technical advice, will provide local artists with useful skills for furthering their professional art practice.
“With practical barriers lessened, we hope the program will provide freedom for artists to focus on their creative ideas.”
