Residents invited to share insights on erosion

Woodgate Beach residents are being encouraged to share their knowledge and observations about erosion as part of ongoing efforts to address issues along the coastline.

The area has historically experienced dramatic changes to its shoreline but in the past few years, more rapid and noticeable shifts have occurred.

Bundaberg Regional Council is hoping to open the conversation with the community to gain a deeper understanding of what is driving these changes and gather feedback on further potential solutions to address the issue.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said sand nourishment programs had been effective in managing erosion in the past, providing the protection needed to safeguard the foreshore.

“Sand nourishment is not a one‑off ‘set and forget’ solution,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“It is an ongoing response to erosive events.

“The rock seawall and sand that has been placed along the northern part of the foreshore in the past has served its purpose by protecting the dunes and reducing the risk of infrastructure loss.

“However, we recognise the need to explore additional protective options and to further research how these erosion patterns are continuing to change to better inform future planning.”

Current data indicates that sand is progressively shifting northwards along the beach, toward Theodolite Creek.

As part of upcoming works, Council is seeking the necessary State and Federal permits to excavate this sand accumulation and relocate it to the foreshore in front of the seawall, near the boat ramp.

Subject to approvals, the work is planned for winter of 2026.

Further investigation into erosion patterns is continuing and additional erosion management works may be undertaken in the future.

A community drop-in session will be held on Monday 20 April at the Woodgate Community Hall, between 3 pm and 7 pm.

Through this session, Council is seeking:

  • Community knowledge and observations about changes in erosion patterns at Woodgate in recent years.
  • Feedback on the seawall and sand nourishment works completed in 2024/25.
  • Feedback on other potential erosion management solutions for vulnerable sections of the foreshore.

The event will also give residents an opportunity to learn more about Council’s next steps in addressing coastal erosion and how their input will help shape future management actions.
