Explore Bundy by canoe with free sessions

Bundaberg Regional Council has partnered with Outdoors Queensland to deliver a series of free canoeing sessions.

To inspire residents to get active outdoors and build confidence on the water, Bundaberg Regional Council has partnered with Outdoors Queensland to deliver a series of free canoeing sessions across the region.

Through BOOM ‘Building Our Outdoor Movement’, three sessions will be offered at three different Bundaberg locations from 30 May.

Participants will explore local waterways while learning new skills in a supportive, beginner‑friendly environment.

All sessions will be guided by qualified outdoor instructor Mark Cartner who holds a Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership and is certified in Swift Water Rescue

Mark shared insights into what participants can expect across the three‑part series and why canoeing is such a powerful way to get active, connect with nature and strengthen community.

The BOOM program will help participants build skills, explore nature and enjoy the outdoors through canoeing Bundaberg waterways.

What do you enjoy most about teaching canoeing to the Bundaberg community?

What I enjoy most is watching people reconnect – with the water, with each other and with themselves.

So many locals live close to these waterways but haven’t had the chance or confidence to get out on them.

Seeing that moment where someone goes from a bit unsure to relaxed, smiling and fully present is incredibly rewarding.

It’s also special to share these places with the community and help build a sense of pride and connection to our local environment.

How does your background in Outdoor Leadership and Swift Water Rescue influence the way you run these sessions?

My background shapes the way I balance safety, learning and enjoyment.

It means sessions are well planned, structured and risk-aware but still relaxed and accessible.

I focus on creating an environment where people feel safe to try something new, knowing they’re supported.

It also allows me to teach practical skills in a simple way so participants leave feeling capable rather than overwhelmed.

What skills or confidence do you hope locals will walk away with after trying canoeing?

Above all I hope they walk away with confidence – the belief that “I can do this.”

From a skills perspective that includes basic paddling techniques, water awareness and how to work together in a canoe.

Just as importantly it’s about building confidence to get outdoors more often, try new things and see our waterways as something they can safely enjoy.

What makes Bundaberg’s waterways a great place for beginners to learn?

Bundaberg is incredibly lucky to have such a variety of sheltered and scenic waterways.

Areas like the Burnett River, Lake Gregory and our coastal inlets provide relatively calm conditions that are ideal for beginners.

They’re accessible, visually stunning and offer a real sense of adventure without being overwhelming.

It’s the perfect environment to learn and build confidence.

Over the three sessions, participants will learn basic paddling techniques, water awareness and how to work together in a canoe.

What would you say to someone who’s unsure or nervous about giving canoeing a go?

That’s completely normal – most people feel that way at the start.

The sessions are designed to be supportive, relaxed and suited to all abilities.

You don’t need any experience, just a willingness to give it a try.

We take it step by step and you might be surprised how quickly that nervousness turns into enjoyment.

We’ve had people of all ages, abilities take to the water and love it.
