A new macadamia processing and packaging facility has been approved for development, supporting the continued growth of the region’s agricultural sector and creating more employment opportunities.
The facility will be located at 295 Hummock Road, Windermere and will process macadamia nuts grown by Red Rock Macadamia.
Established in 2006, Red Rock Macadamia continues to expand its operations, with the development representing the next stage of the company’s growth.
The purpose-built facility will include storage areas, a cracking room, packing room, cold rooms, a loading dock, offices, laboratories, lunchrooms and staff amenities to support processing and packaging operations.
The development also features 17 car parking spaces, including two accessible parking spaces.
The facility is expected to process up to 2,500 tonnes of macadamias annually and employ approximately 12 staff, with up to six employees rostered per operational shift during the harvest season.
Operations are proposed between 7 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday and 8 am to 4 pm on Saturdays, primarily during the 20-week harvest season from March to August.
Outside the harvest season, the facility will be used for general maintenance and office and administration functions, with between one and three staff expected to be on site.
As part of the approval, the development will be required to comply with relevant environmental requirements, including measures to ensure noise, dust and odour emissions meet the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act.
This includes the condition that prohibits dehusking of the nuts on the site.
