One of Bundaberg’s significant public art pieces has been relocated to a new setting, creating a stronger visual connection to the Burnett River.
The Ceratodus sculpture has been relocated from the front of River Cruz Café to further east along the Quay Street carpark.
The new location has been carefully selected to improve the presentation and accessibility of the artwork while providing greater separation between the sculpture and passers-by.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the new location would give the sculpture a fresh setting while helping ensure it could continue to be enjoyed by the community.
“The Ceratodus is a distinctive piece of public art and an important part of the character of the Quay Street area,” she said.
“Relocating it gives us an opportunity to showcase the sculpture in a new way, with a clear visual connection to the river and landscaping that complements the artwork.
“We look forward to seeing the Ceratodus settle into its new home and continuing to be a feature for locals and visitors to enjoy.”
About the Ceratodus
The sculpture, created by local artist John Olsen, takes inspiration from the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, commonly known as the Queensland lungfish or Ceratodus.
The species is one of the world’s most ancient living lungfish and is native to the waterways of south-east Queensland, including the Burnett River.
With its distinctive appearance and strong connection to the region’s waterways, the lungfish provides a fitting subject for public art in Bundaberg, reflecting the important relationship between the community and the Burnett River.
The sculpture forms part of the area’s public art offering, helping bring local stories, natural history and the character of the region into the public realm.
