Dog owners who use the Bundaberg North Lions Dog Park are being encouraged to make alternative arrangements, with the area closed indefinitely due to significant flood damage.
Bundaberg Regional Council made the decision after discovering the site’s fencing and footings were destroyed, leaving the area no longer secure for pets.
Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk said the closure, while disappointing, was necessary to ensure community safety.
“We understand this is unfortunate news for local dog owners who regularly use the North Lions Park facility,” he said.
“However, the extent of the flood damage means the area cannot be used as a secure off-leash space.
“We encourage residents to make use of the other dedicated off-leash areas available across the region.”
Council currently provides a number of enclosed off-leash dog parks and off-leash areas.
These locations include:
- Northern end of Fred Courtice Avenue, Bargara (Neilson Park)
- Daph Geddes Park, East Bundaberg
- Mary Kinross Park, southern Bargara
- Apple Tree Creek Community Park
- Designated sections of the Woodgate foreshore
Council reminds all residents that being a responsible pet owner means you are legally responsible for your pet’s behaviour at all times.
“Maintaining control of your dog and following simple rules helps ensure off-leash areas remain safe and enjoyable for everyone,” Cr Kirk said.
