A key timber bridge servicing more than 300 vehicles daily will be temporarily closed as Bundaberg Regional Council undertakes essential refurbishment works to ensure its long-term safety and reliability.
Wendlands Gully Bridge, located in Avondale, is an important transport link connecting Bucca to Rosedale Road.
The upcoming works will involve the replacement of sections of the bridge, including decking and kerbing.
Additional maintenance activities will also be carried out, including vegetation clearing, updated signage and line marking to improve safety for all road users.
Roads and Infrastructure (rural) portfolio spokesperson Cr Bill Trevor said the works were identified as a priority following routine bridge inspections.
“Regular inspections are critical to maintaining the safety and functionality of our infrastructure and these upgrades will ensure Wendlands Gully Bridge continues to serve the community well into the future,” he said.
“We understand closures can be inconvenient but these works are necessary to maintain a safe and reliable road network for residents, farmers and transport operators who rely on this route every day.”

During the closure, motorists are advised to use the following detours:
Detour 1: Via North Bucca Road and Bucca Road (approximately 28 km).
Detour 2: Via Reads and Pollocks Road (approximately 14 km).
“We encourage road users to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow all signage in place during the closure,” Cr Trevor said.
The project will begin in early May and the bridge is expected to reopen approximately six weeks after works commence, weather permitting.
Bundaberg Regional Council thanks the community for its patience and cooperation during this important infrastructure upgrade.
