Increasing safety concerns regarding the Crofton Street public toilet have prompted Bundaberg Regional Council to close the amenities while undertaking a safety review.
It’s the latest action Council has taken to reclaim the vibrancy of the Bundaberg CBD after launching its Safe Spaces, Thriving Places project.
Deputy Mayor Steve Cooper said assaults, harassment, drug use and vandalism were among the issues being reported at this location.
“This is a toilet block that was built in the ‘70s which does not meet our current standards for accessibility or safety,” Cr Cooper said.
“Unfortunately antisocial and criminal behaviours have been reported at this location for some time and it only seems to be increasing.
“At the present time Council has not made a formal decision about the future of this facility however in line with the actions we are taking under the Safe Spaces, Thriving Places campaign we felt this immediate action was necessary.
“The Crofton Street toilet block will be closed indefinitely while we undertake a safety review.”
Cr Cooper said the Crofton Street toilet block had become a cost burden for ratepayers due to the high frequency of graffiti and vandalism.
Through the Safe Spaces, Thriving Places project he said Council’s parks team had also ramped up its cleaning schedule within the CBD.
