Loose change is adding up to make a meaningful difference at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre, where staff are raising funds for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal through container recycling.
Bottles and cans collected via the centre’s daily operations are recycled through Queensland’s container refund scheme, with each eligible container returning 10 cents to help support locals in need during the festive season.
Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said the initiative showed how simple steps taken by local businesses could generate real community benefit.
“This is a great example of how something small and practical can add up to something special for our community,” she said.
“By choosing to collect and recycle bottles and cans, the Moncrieff team is not only reducing waste but also helping to support local families through the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.”
Mayor Blackburn said the approach could easily be adopted by businesses of all sizes across the Bundaberg Region.
“Many businesses already produce recyclable containers as part of their day-to-day operations,” she said.
“If more organisations took this simple step, the combined impact could raise valuable funds and build awareness of the Christmas Appeal well ahead of the festive season.”
Funds raised through the Appeal help support local individuals and families doing it tough, particularly during Christmas when financial pressures can be greatest.
Mayor Blackburn said initiatives like this mid-year donation helped maintain momentum and community awareness outside the traditional Christmas period.
“Support doesn’t have to start in December,” she said.
“Community-led ideas like this help keep the focus on helping others all year round.”
The Mayor encouraged local businesses and community groups to consider taking part in small fundraising initiatives that align with their everyday activities.
