Local families took a trip back in time as they celebrated 70 fun-filled years of Under 8’s Day at the Childers Showgrounds.
Children enjoyed a petting zoo, jumping castle and a range of activity stations at the free annual celebration supported by the Isis Child and Family Program and Childers Neighbourhood Centre.
Kim Cameron from Bright Horizons Daycare attended the event for the first time and got everyone moving with her ‘Back to the 80s’ dance station.
“I actually taught aerobics in the eighties, so I put together some fun moves to go with the music for the kids,” Kim said.
“It supports coordination by getting hands and feet moving at the same time, and balance so it’s cognitive as well as physical and fun!”
Chloe Umber brought her daughter Norah along to celebrate her third birthday and said her highlights had been the jumping castle and face painting.
“I love that the community gets together,” Chloe said.
“I’m also a teacher at the local school so it’s lovely to get down here as a parent and as a teacher as well.”
Local emergency and support services were also on-site interacting with visitors and providing information, while the Rotary Club of Childers ran a free community barbecue to fuel hungry kids and parents.
Rotary Club member Sue McCloy said they enjoyed supporting the annual event.
“Every year for numerous years we have done the Under 8s Day and the Rotary Club of Childers provides the service of cooking the barbecue for the neighbourhood centre and Council who provide the sausages and the bread,” Sue said.
“The best part is the kids of course!
“We just enjoy seeing them out having a good time interacting with the animals and enjoying all the activities.”
