Pedestrians will soon benefit from improved pathways and a new raised pedestrian priority crossing as Bundaberg Regional Council delivers accessibility upgrades along Maryborough St and surrounding areas.
The project will enhance pedestrian access through a busy precinct that includes a high school, shopping centre, RV and caravan park and the Bundaberg Multiplex, making it easier and safer for people to move between the key local destinations.
Council identified the need for the upgrades through the use of innovative video analytics technology in 2024.
The data revealed substantial pedestrian activity throughout the area despite limited supporting infrastructure and connectivity.
As works progress, Boreham St will be closed this week until mid-December to allow for the construction of the new raised pedestrian crossing and associated pathway upgrades.
The pedestrian signals near Bundaberg State High School will also be upgraded to improve safety and better accommodate increasing pedestrian use.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the improvements would create a safer and more connected environment for pedestrians.
“These upgrades are great news for the many people who travel through this area every day, whether they’re heading to school, the shops or other nearby facilities,” she said.
“By improving pathways and installing a raised pedestrian priority crossing at the intersection of Maryborough St and Boreham St, we’re making it easier and safer for pedestrians to access the services and destinations they rely on.
“We thank residents and road users for their patience while this important work is carried out.”
Construction will take place during daytime hours, with the project expected to be completed by late December 2026, weather permitting.
Traffic management measures, including a temporary detour during construction of the raised crossing, will be in place throughout the works.
Signage will guide motorists and pedestrians through the area, while the site supervisor will liaise directly with affected residents to maintain property access where possible.
