Remembrance program flourishes in 2025

Streets of Remembrance
Council’s Streets of Remembrance program grew in 2025 and now recognises over 100 veterans with a connection to the Bundaberg Region.

2025 has seen Bundaberg Regional Council’s Streets of Remembrance program flourish with more local military veterans acknowledged under the popular scheme.

Sixty applications under the program were received in the past 12 months, with 24 applications approved, including both applications to badge existing streets and requests for future street names.

There are now over 100 veterans with a connection to the Bundaberg Region recognised through the Streets of Remembrance program with Defence Force insignia added to the streets named in their honour.

Throughout the year Council has shared stories of heroism and sacrifice from those honoured:

Brewer Street, Burnett Heads

Brewer Street in Burnett Heads was named for William James Brewer who was local to Burnett Heads and served in the First World War.

Buzza Street, Walkervale

Buzza Street in Walkervale displays the Rising Sun badge of the Australian Army honouring the service of Private Victor Buzza who fought in World War II.

Carolyn Kennedy Drive, Thabeban

A future road in the new Bundaberg Hospital precinct named for local nurse and Vietnam War veteran Carolyn Kennedy will display the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) insignia.

Ellis Street, Bundaberg North

A street named for a long-standing local family now bears the rising sun badge of the Australian Army in recognition of the wartime service of family member Lance Corporal Henry Herbert Ellis.

Finlay Street, Kepnock

Finlay Street in Kepnock honours the service of four members of the Finlay family who served in World Wars I and II.

Hay Street (East) and Hay Street (West), Avenell Heights

Hay Street (East and West) in Kepnock was named in honour of World War II pilot Flight Sergeant Roy Neville Hay in November 1951.

Hipathite Road, Waterloo

The World War I service of Private William Hipathite has been recognised on the rural road that was named in his honour.

Keys Street, Avenell Heights

World War I Head Sister Constance Mabel Keys has been remembered for her highly decorated military service with Keys Street, Avenell Heights badged in her honour.

McMurtrie Street, Svensson Heights

McMurtrie Street was named in 1955 to honour the service of Corporal Matthew Smith McMurtrie who served in World War II. 

Messengers Road, Bullyard

Messengers Road in Bullyard now displays the badge of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in honour of Leading Aircraftman Kevin Robert Messenger.

Orr Street, Bundaberg East

Orr Street in Bundaberg East was named for Flight Sergeant Thomas Orr in July 1951, a Bundaberg resident who served with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in World War II.

Page Street, Svensson Heights

Page Street, Svensson Heights displays the badge of the Australian Army in honour of Captain Frank Page.

Roselt Street, Svensson Heights

Roselt Street, Svensson Heights was named on 22 November 1951 in honour of Lance Sergeant Roselt.

Row Street, Kepnock

First named on 19 July 1951, Row Street in Kepnock honours the service of Corporal Laurence Row and Gunner Frederick Nicholas Row during World War II.

Tootell Crescent, Bundaberg East

Tootell Crescent was named in July 1973 in honour of the Tootell family which included Private Eric Francis Tootell who served in WWII.
