Focus on disaster preparedness at Australia Day

A range of emergency services and local groups, including Council’s Disaster Management team, will be available to chat to at this year’s Australia Day event in Bargara.

As the community comes together to celebrate Australia Day in Bargara, Bundaberg Regional Council’s Disaster Management team will be encouraging residents to take a few simple steps towards being disaster ready for the year ahead.

The free, family-friendly event will be held at Nielson Park on Monday 26 January from 11 am to 5 pm, offering something for everyone with live music, activities, games and food stalls.

Council’s Disaster Management officers will also be on site, giving residents an opportunity to chat, ask questions and access practical information to help prepare for disasters.

The team will be located alongside representatives from Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue, Marine Rescue Queensland, Australian Red Cross, NBN and SES.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said Australia Day was a great opportunity to talk about disaster readiness in a relaxed environment.

“Coming together as a community on Australia Day is something we really value and it’s also the perfect chance to have important conversations about being prepared,” she said.

“Our Disaster Management team is excited to be at Bargara, helping residents understand what they can do now to be ready for the year ahead, whether that’s storm season, bushfires or other emergencies.”

Mayor Blackburn encouraged residents to visit the team to learn more about Council’s Disaster Dashboard, which provides up-to-date information before, during and after disaster events.

“The Disaster Dashboard is a key tool for our community, offering real-time updates, warnings and important information when it matters most,” she said.

“I encourage everyone attending the event to stop by, have a chat with the team and find out how to stay informed and prepared.”

The Bargara Australia Day event is proudly supported through the National Australia Day Council and Get Ready Queensland.
