From police dogs and flying doctors to crazy scientists and emergency crews, residents can get up close with the people who spring into action when disaster strikes at this year’s Get Ready Queensland Week Emergency Services Expo.
Bundaberg Regional Council is teaming up with local emergency services and community organisations to help residents get ready for Queensland’s wild weather season, with a week of activities running from Tuesday 6 October to Saturday 10 October.
The main event, the Get Ready Week Emergency Services Expo, will be held at the Bundaberg Multiplex on Saturday 10 October.
It will give families the chance to meet the people behind the uniforms, see emergency services in action and pick up practical tips to help keep themselves, their families and their homes safe.
Running from 9 am to noon, the free community event will have plenty happening throughout the morning.
At 10 am, the Wild Weather: The Crazy Scientist Strikes Back! presentation will bring a fun and interactive approach to learning about wild weather, before the QPS Dog Squad takes to the stage at 11 am for a demonstration.
There will also be an impressive line-up of emergency services and community organisations on hand, including Queensland Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Service Queensland, Queensland State Emergency Service, Queensland Police Service, Sunwater, Australian Red Cross, Surf Life Saving, Royal Flying Doctor Service, LifeFlight and Marine Rescue.
Bundaberg Regional Council Local Disaster Management Group chair Mayor Helen Blackburn said the expo was an opportunity to ask questions, find out more about local organisations and, most importantly, get in the know about how to be better prepared.
“You never know when the next storm, flood or other emergency might happen, but you can make sure you’re ready before it does,” she said.
“The Emergency Services Expo is about bringing preparedness to life.
“You can meet the people who are there when disaster strikes, see some of the equipment and skills they use and learn what you and your family can do to be ready.”
Getting ready across the region
The Expo is just one part of a week-long program designed to take the preparedness message into local communities.
Residents will have the chance to attend disaster preparedness sessions in Childers, Gin Gin and Woodgate, as well as connect with Council at a Bunnings community engagement event in Bundaberg.
